Which BVI Yacht Is Right for You?

Straight answers to the questions travellers ask most when choosing a yacht in the British Virgin Islands. Want suggestions for your own trip? Use “Help Me Choose” at the top of the page.

Honeymoons and couples

What is the best BVI yacht charter for a honeymoon?

A two-cabin sailing catamaran or a 35–40 ft monohull suits most couples. A catamaran gives more deck space and a stable ride at anchor; a monohull feels more like classic sailing. If neither of you sails, choose a crewed or skippered charter so you can simply relax.

Where do couples like to anchor in the BVI?

Quiet favourites include Cooper Island, Benures Bay on Norman Island, Little Harbour on Peter Island and the reef-protected anchorage at Anegada. Plan a mix of quiet coves and lively spots like Jost Van Dyke.

Groups of couples and friends

Which yachts suit three or four couples sailing together?

Choose a catamaran with one cabin per couple, ideally each with its own head. Four-cabin, four-head catamarans of 42–50 ft are the most common fit. Check the cabins, heads and guests on each listing so no couple ends up with a shared bathroom.

Can a large group charter one yacht in the BVI?

Yes. Large catamarans carry 10–12 guests, and bigger crewed yachts take more. For very large groups, two yachts sailing together (a flotilla) often works best. Book early for Christmas, New Year and Easter.

Families and first-time charterers

What is the best yacht for a family charter in the BVI?

A sailing catamaran is the family favourite: it stays level under way, has a big shaded cockpit and lots of easy deck space, and anchors in shallow water close to calm beaches. Ask the charter company for child life jackets and netting.

Do I need sailing experience to charter in the BVI?

For a bareboat charter you need relevant sailing experience, and charter companies will ask for a sailing résumé. If you don't have it, book a crewed charter or add a skipper for some or all of your week.

Snorkelling, diving and watersports

Where is the best snorkelling on a BVI charter?

The Indians and the Caves at Norman Island, The Baths on Virgin Gorda, the wreck of the RMS Rhone near Salt Island and Horseshoe Reef off Anegada. National Parks Trust moorings protect the reefs at many of these sites.

Which yacht type gets to the most snorkel spots in a week?

A power catamaran covers the most ground — the run to Anegada takes a couple of hours rather than most of a day. Sailing catamarans are a close second and draw little water, so they can anchor close to shore.

Value and budget

Can I find a BVI yacht charter under $5,000 a week?

Yes. Smaller and older monohulls often charter for well under $5,000 a week, especially in shoulder season. Sort the yacht grid by price and check the special offers page for current deals.

How do I get the best price on a BVI yacht charter?

Sail in May, June or November, consider a slightly older yacht, compare the same yacht type across charter companies on BVI Charter Search, and look for early-booking or last-minute offers. Remember to budget for provisioning, mooring fees, fuel and cruising permits.
